Higher speed limits can lead to safer roads »
Posted By pagey 1 year, 5 months ago in StyleWhen the Northridge earthquake of 1994 flattened parts of Interstate 405 in Los Angeles, the 401 across the top of Toronto, at least temporarily, became the busiest highway in the world. Considerable knowledge and occasional anecdotal evidence on Germany's autobahns also makes me wonder if we also now have the fastest highways in the world.

I have thought this for a while, I'm not sure it would make roads safer but I think today's cars can handle traveling at faster speeds safely. When you think of the kind of vehicle's that were on the road when some of these limits were set, we now have cars with power brakes, steering, anti-lock brakes, traction control, and so on. Not only that but the tires and suspension have improved so much.

I SPEED!! Ok, cleared my system. I think nothing of safety features you bring up. My car could have a lap belt for all I care, my speed will not change. I do what my skill allows me to do safely. Hell I use my blinkers when forced to reach the wide open right lane to escape retard packs, the slow f**ks that clog the lanes as some sort of gang hell bent on griefing us. Was stuck behind some drunk fool fresh from the casino doing 40mph on a 60mph exit.
If you're not a safe driver at 25mph then 60-80 makes you a serious threat.I've seen 120mph crashes unfold infront of me, it wasn't the speed but their skill and brain power. Hah seen a near fatal 15mph wreck at a stop sign.

It's not the speed limit, it's the idiots in the left lane doing the speed limit or under that cause the problems.
For the record, if you are traveling in the left lane and you see a car coming up behind you - no matter how fast you are going, or think you are going - get out of the way and let the car pass. This is how the freeway is supposed to work.
It's not your job to enforce the speed limit, so get out the way slow-poke!

I'm smart enough to look ahead of me and see the police before I get to them.
And still, it's not your job to enforce the speed limit, so get out the way.

So I think what smith is saying is that the left lane is for law breakers. If you are doing the speed limit get out of the left lane? The guy in the left lane doing the speed limit is within the law. Sounds like some people like to drive over the speed limit and has road rage for any one who is not speeding.

No, what I said is that the left lane is for passing - no matter how fast you are going. If a car is forced to pass you in the right lane than you and the other driver have made the road unsafe for all.
Why do you feel that it is your right to hinder the flow of traffic? Get out of the way and let the traffic proceed then you can move back over and have the whole left lane to yourself.
Harheas and protoham, as for speeding, I'm willing to pay the ticket if I'm stopped by the police/sheriff/Highway Patrol so what business is it of yours?
I live in an area with just a couple of hills and there is always some yahoo in the left lane doing 55 or less in a 65 because they either don't understand how to downshift or don't want to. So why should I or other drivers be penalized because they don't know how to or can't operate their vehicles? I don't tailgate and I don't pass on the right but why should I or others be hindered if the right lane is open? Can you answer that?

And what it sounds like you are saying is that the left lane is for the junior g-men who want oh so badly to be police officers.

Big trucks also drive in any lane they choose. Unless they are a car carrier going down the road at 95 mph. they should stay in the right lane where they belong and stop playing games.
I thought we had a fuel shortage, why would people want to drive faster?

It would seem logical!
When you travel at higher speed, you automatically tend to be more alert.
Plus, when you travel a higher speeds, the probability of colliding with other vehicles going in the same direction at differing speeds AND the laws of averages could, conceivably, reduce accidents.
One thing stands out, though: at higher speeds, accidents tend to be more spectacular, hence deadly.
On the other hand, slow speeds mesmerize people and reduce theri alertness and tempt drivers to engage in other attention- distracting activities...
