We tend to have bad measurement systems here in the US. We've got a temperature scale where water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 (it's zero and 100 for the rest of the world.) And none of our measurements are compatible with our base10 numbering system. Twelve inches in a foot? 5280 feet in a mile? I mean...come on...

While gallons/mile (or whatever) make sense if that is YOUR question, to say everyone else is stupid (calling MPG stupid implies that those who use it are stupid) is...well... stupid. What I want to know is how much will it cost to fill my gas tank. I want to know how far I'll go on a tank. I want to know how often I need to fill up. I can do all this tricky math in my head from mpg. I could do it with gallons/10k miles, but why? Because it helps your green movement?

To think (as your article suggests) that the sole/major purpose of this sort of measurement is to measure the green-ness of a car is impossibly egotistical. Sorry. I can get along fine for every purpose I need with the current system. Sounds like you need some remedial math.

It should be dpm (dollars per mile) if you want some real useful information.

      or Euro per km

If we were going to go REALLY rational about his, it would be kilometres per litre - wouldn't it? If we had just gone ahead and made everything here metric back in the 70's when it was last seriously proposed, everyone would be used to it by now, and everyone who was less than ... about 40 years old ... wouldn't know any other system.

Many fortnights I have wondered, and even more furlongs I have traveled seeking a system of measurement easier to use than the english standards. After pondering imperial and regular pints, I usually just doze off before I find some other angstrom-sized windmill to tilt at.

Everything is just an Angstrom away from complete truth.

A few drams of this, or grains of that, and I don't care much about my McRoyale in Amsterdam, except that it weighs one-quarter pound before cooking at an acceptable temperature in degrees Farenheit.
